It is perhaps why so many fictional pieces are written about him to this very day.
His presence is sorely missed to this very day and legions of fans still feel the pain of his untimely death even 12 years later. As for Peter let us not forget the gorgeous 6'8", long black haired, muscular, tattooed Goth vampire that he was. Just listen to Bloody Kisses (A Death in the Family), this alone is a symphony of greatness, a masterpiece! Get lost in that song. His vocals again are unforgettable and he wrote all the music and lyrics for TON's library of music. The musical talent of Peter is truly out of this world although most of his songs are of depression, death, love, hate. TON was also playful, humorous and obnoxious, just listen to Black #1, a TON anthem. The songs transport you to feelings and time and places you hold dear or dare not want to go but you do.
TON's music and Peter's voice is all encompassing to the listener. You must go back for more and more of that baritone voice which draws you in then shifts to the most beautiful range and you are then lost in the lyrics and music. After listening to TON songs and hearing Peter's voice for the first time you can never forget it. His voice is phenomenal, deep, soulful, haunting, hypnotic and beautiful. He had a presence like no other and was a complex, unique, gentle giant of a man. Peter Steele is a Rock God in my eyes and his talent and persona are one of a kind. They have influenced so many groups with their haunting, gothic, metal infused style. First off TON are the masters of Goth Metal and stand alone in their unique sound hands down. There are so many rock and metal bands of all genres that are snubbed for years and Peter Steele and the boys of TON are no exception to this asinine nomination process. Why in the hell do rap and hip hop artists get in when they are NOT rock? With so many true rock artists waiting for years to get a nod why do these artists even get in? I so don't want to hear about how rap influenced rock bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers yadda yadda! What else burns me is how artists are waiting for years to be inducted and then they die without a chance of ever receiving this acknowledgement. I find it hard to believe and a travesty that Type O Negative has yet to be inducted or even nominated in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I for one find it a travesty that the Drab Four are not in the Hall, this when others considered Goth are recently inducted, Murderers and hard core Gang Members celebrated for their so called music, there is no talent there. John, Josh, Kenny, without them none of this would've been accomplished, the poetry that is Type O Negative's music wouldn't be the path that many today continue to follow to live their lives when darkness wanted to take them the road more traveled.
And from the grave, the mountain of a man still has the same effect on female fans that he did in the 90's. Long time fans, and new ones, just discovering this amazing band to this day give their accounts of what the music does for them in their lives. Peter Steele has been gone for ten years now, yet he has been the anchor for many a follower with his beautiful words and his god like voice. Type O Negative is one of those bands that continue to inspire and awe fans long after the curtain has been drawn for the last performance. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't seem to understand that rock and roll is about rebellion, shock, and innovation, not pop culture. The Hall seems only to recognize acts supported by the new versions of payola, MTV being one of them. Type O should absolutely be in the Hall of Fame, which is exactly why they probably never will be. It's gothic metal that is so far ahead of it's time that it fly's over the heads of many casual listeners, about subject matter that has never been represented musically since the beginning of time. It's manic artistry at it's absolute finest. Type O is what happens when death metal grows up and knows what to do next. These are the type of artists that should be recognized for their musical contributions to the world. They're an amazing band that is truly legendary. There are no other bands of the caliber at which Type O delivers persistent unique catharsis for such a large group of people. Call it self-deprecating horror doom metal or whatever you wish. Type O Negative is so unique that they are their own genre. You may have just hit the nail on the head for a major flaw in the hall's original purpose.įame is not simply found within name recognition, but also in sonic influence.
